The United States Air Force conducted their first combat mission with the F-35A Lightning II as a part of Operation Inherent Resolve on April 30th, 2019. The aircraft conducted an airstrike with a Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) against an Islamic State tunnel network and weapons cache in Iraq’s Hamrin Mountain Range. The first deployment of USAF F-35A’s to the Middle East began on April 15th with the aircraft operating as a part of the 4th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, US Air Forces Central Command (AFCENT). F-35’s belonging to the US Marine Corps and Israeli Air Force were confirmed to have made their combat debut last year with similar strike missions.
