The US Navy has decided to go forward with the Development of a new Nuclear Ballistic missile submarine SSBN-X or the Colombia class. The construction is set to start in 2021 ,with commissioning between 2027 and 2031
The Colombia will replace the Ohio class which is set to be decommissioned starting in 2027. The Colombia Class will be able to deploy 16 Trident D5 missiles. The continuing development of Nuclear Submarines is a response to the rise of North Korea as a nuclear power.
Currently the Ohio Class is the primary nuclear submarine in use, while the B-1B, B-2 and B-52 also function as nuclear delivery platforms.
